Townsville Daily Bulletin 17 May 1939
SAD DROWNING.
Mr. McClelland's Death.
Robert Sylvester McClelland, aged
56 a member of one of Townsville's
oldest and most respected families,
died in tragic circumstances last
night. About 8.45 o'clock, the police
and Ambulance were called to Church
street, West End, where a lad had
noticed a body lying in about a foot
of water, near the causeway which
spans a small tidal creek between
West End and Hermit Park. The body
was tangled up in a bicycle, which
had to be removed before assistance
was possible. Artificial respiration
was practised for some time by the
police, Ambulance, and Dr. Halber
stater without success.
It is thought McClelland, when
riding a bicycle from West End to
Hermit Park, rode off the causeway,
which is about three feet high, and
fell with the bicycle over the side,
which is not railed off. The creek at
this point is rocky, and it is thought
he may have been knocked uncon
scious by the fall. It is not known at
what time the mishap occurred, but
it is thought that the body had lain
in the water for some time. The tide
was going out when the police and
Ambulance arrived, at which time
there was about a foot of water where
the body lay, but when the tide was
full, there would have been two feet
or more.
The late Mr. McClelland was a son
of Mr. R. W. McCelland a former
Mayor of Townsville, and founder of
the old established firm of McClelland
and Son, cordial manufacturers, and
president of the Townsville Choral
Society for many years. He leaves a
widow and a grown-up family of five
sons and one daughter, who are well
known in sporting circles. His death
will come as a great shock to a wide
circle of friends.
The funeral will move from his late
residence, 25 Clarendon-street, Hermit
Park, at 4.30 p.m. to-day.
