Forbes Advocate 15 Feb 1921
SUDDEN DEATH
A SAD HAPPENING.
Early yesterday morning Mr.
Thomas Mason and his wife were
engaged in gathering vegetables at
Mr. Mason's garden, near Fitzger-
ald's Bridge. They were working
away in different portions of the
garden for some time, when Mrs.
Mason missed her husband. Going to
where she had seen him last, Mrs.
Mason was horrified to see him lying
on his face, apparently dead. Mr.
William Barton, who lives close by,
was called in, and he did all he
could for the wife, but on the doctor
being called in, life was pronounced
extinct. Mr. Mason had passed away
without a struggle.
The deceased was one of the best
gardeners in the district. About 3
years ago he acquired a portion of
land near Fitzgerald's bridge, and in
a very short space of time he had
transformed an apparently barren
and sandy piece of land into one of
the most up-to-date gardens in the
district. Throughout the dry time,
Mr. Mason's garden was one of the
beauty spots of Forbes, all kinds of
vegetables growing in profusion, the
owner of the plot demonstrating
what could be done by the judicious
use of water. It is sad indeed, when
one thinks that just when the gar-
den had been made into a going con-
cern, and future prospects were
bright, the owner should pass away
so suddenly.
The deceased was 45 years of age
and leaves a widow and one child,
for whom the greatest sympathy is
expressed. A quiet man who was
content to attend to his own busi-
ness, the deceased had made many
friends in Forbes, all of whom will
be very sorry to hear of his sad
end. The late Mr. Mason was of the
congregation of St. John's Church
of England, and as superintendent
of the Sunday School had done much
to assist in the training of the young
folk. The Sunday School scholars
especially, will miss the kindly as-
sistance and advice of their super-
intendent.
The acting-coroner, Mr. W. T.
Gilchrist, was communicated with,
and an inquiry will in all probabi-
lity be held.
Mr Mason attended services at
St. John's Church on Sunday as usual
and was apparently in his usual
health, and his sudden death next
morning gives the happening a very
sad aspect.
The funeral this afternoon will be
to the Church of England cemetery,
leaving Forbes at 4 o'clock.

OBITUARY.
LATE MRS. R. MASON.
It was with sad feeling the Lock
hart people heard the definite news
on Monday, of the death of Mrs.
Robina Flora Mason, secretary and
librarian of the Lockhart School of
Arts, and caretaker of the C.W.A.
Rest Rooms. About a month ago,
Mrs. Mason, after being ill here for
weeks, left for Sydney, accompanied
by Mrs. J. J. Nolan, her son, Mr.
Rupert Mason (now employed at
the Cootamundra Post Office) join
ing the train at Cootamundra.
When in Sydney, she consulted var
ious specialists, but they held out
little hope, her case being looked
upon as incurable. Possibly, in the
circumstances, her passing can be
viewed as a happy release, saving
her continued suffering.
Deceased was held in high esteem
by all who knew her. A native of
Wooroonoke (Victoria), she eventu
ally came to Urana to live, her mai
den name being Paulin. In 1909,
she married Mr. Thomas Mason, a
brother of Mrs. J. J. Nolan, of Lock
hart. Later, Mr. Mason and his
brother controlled a very successful
market garden at Lockhart, the pro
perty now held by Mr. W. Peterson.
On selling out, Mr. Mason estab
lished gardens for himself at Forbes
(N.S.W.) and met his death in
rather tragic circumstances, his de
mise being attributed to the poison
ous sting of an insect whilst he was
working in his garden. Sometime
after the death, Mrs. Mason and her
son Rupert (the only child) came to
Lockhart to live and for some years
she successfully conducted a cafe
business of her own in McCracken's
Buildings. Upon relinquishing the
business, she obtained easier em
ployment in the town as already in
dicated in this report, her son, in
the meantime joining the Postal
service, in which he has made ex
cellent progress up-to-date. We ex
tend to him our sincerest sympathy
in the loss of a good mother.
The funeral took place on Mon
day afternoon, in Sydney. Mr. Rup
ert Mason and his cousin, Mr. S.
Bennet, of Borambola, will return
to Lockhart on Wednesday.
At the meeting of the Lockhart
School of Arts Committee, a resolu
tion of condolence with the relatives
of Mrs. Mason was carried in solemn
form and on the motion of Mr. Par
ker, seconded by Mr. Barrett, the
acting secretary was requested to
send Mr. Rupert Mason a telegram
of condolence.
