Late Mr W. A. Collins
One of the best known citizens
of the Port Curtis district, Wil-
liam Alexander Collins, passed
away at his residence, Auckland
Hill, Gladstone, last week after a
lengthy illness. Born at Coleraine
County Derby, Ireland, in 1876,
the late Mr Collins came to Aus-
tralia when a child. In his voun
ger days he was employed by the
CQME Co, Ltd. He enlisted in the
first AIF in October, 1916, at |
Rockhampton, and saw service
in France with the 107th howitzer
battery. He was discharged in
1918 owing to the effects of gas.
In 1920, the late Mr Collins ac
cepted the position of superinten-
dent of the Ubobo soldier settle
ment area, where he remained for
three years, and was then appoint-
ed land ranger at Gladstone, which
position be held until ill-health
compelled him to retire in 1935.
He married Miss F. E. Pritchard
of St Leonard's Tasmania in 1927.
Cue daughter, Margaret Anne, is
a pupil at the Glennie School, Too-
woomba.
The late Mr Collins wa 6 a
prominent member of the Glad-
stone sub-branch of the BSSAILA
a member of the Masonic frater-
nity and the Gladstone Bowling
Club. He was of a studious na-
ture, with a quiet reserved dis-
position and had a large circle of
friends in all parts of the district
and other portions of the State.
His funeral, which took place from
St Saviour's Church of England,
was largely attended. The Rev
Kirby officiated at thc church and
at thc graveside, the pall bearers
were'Messrs A. H. P. Friend
(Masonic Lodge). P. A. Friend
(RSSAILA), A. W. Drewe (Bow-
ling Club), G. Matthews (Publi
Service, and J. R. F. McDonald
and L. Bartlet (long-standing
friends).
