Daily Examiner (Grafton 24 May 1932
MRS. EMMA GOODENOUGH.
Mrs Emma Goodenough, a pioneer of the Bucca Creek district, died at the residence of her son, Mr. George Goodenough, Coff's Harbor, on Friday morning, aged 80 years.
Deceased was born in Sydney, maiden name being Jones. She went with her parents as a child to Araluen, in the Braidwood district, where her father engaged in mining pursuits. There she married her late husband, Mr. John Goodenough, who was instrumental in the finding of Major's Creek, and other mines about Araluen. Over 50 years ago they came to Grafton, where they had a small business for a year or two, and 47 or 48 years ago went to Lower Bucca to select land there. They were among the first settlers and had to cut their way through the scrub to get to their new home. That was before the mining days at the Creek. The late Mr. John Goodenough died at the home there about 28years ago.
In recent years deceased has been living with members of her family, spending most of her time with her daughter, Mrs. J. Wear, at Bucca Creek. A fortnight ago she came to visit her son George, at Coff's Harbor. Although she had not been in the best of health during the past five or six years, she could not be said to be very ill. About nine months ago she was a patient in Coff's Harbor District Hospital, but recovered, and was able to return home. On Thursday night she was at the table and had her supper as usual. On Friday she awoke, spoke to her daughter-in-law, and then lay down and went to sleep. She died in her sleep about half-past eight.
Sons of deceased are Messrs. Joseph (Casino), Arthur (teacher at Redhead Public School and late of Bonville), Rockley and George (Coff's Harbor); Mesdames D. Child (Kangaroo Creek), W. Burns (Grafton), and J. Wear (Bucca Creek), are daughters. Mr. Alex Jones of Maclean, is a brother of deceased and is the last surviving member of that branch of the Jones family. The funeral took place in the Methodist portion of Coff's Harbor, on Saturday afternoon.
