Daily Mercury (Mackay) 5 March 1932
The town was shocked on Wednes
day when the news went around of
Mr. W H. Phelp's death. The de
ceased had been ailing for some
months with blood pressure, but I am
told that on Tuesday he felt well and
hearty, and was conversing with vari
ous friends during the day. Some
time during Tuesday night he woke
up feeling unwell with terrific pains
in the head which proved fatal. He
leaves a wife and grown-up family
of three daughters and one son — Mrs
W. Pearson (Koumala), Miss May
Phelps (school teacher, who is at
present down South on sick leave),
Miss Maud Phelps (bookkeeper) and
Mr Allen W H Phelps (butcher),
both in Mirani. The deceased with his
brother Mr. A. H. Phelps came out
to Queensland in the ship Carnatic
landing in Townsville on September
28 1880 From there they made for
Bowen where deceased gained em
ployment from the late I H Isbell.
Leaving there he came to Mackay to
try his luck and there be met the
Rawson brothers, eventually opening
up a butcher's shop for the former at
the "Nyth" Mirani, after which, in
company with Mr. E. Hannan he
bought the Rawson Bros out, and had
been carrying on the business as
Hannan & Co up till about three
years ago, when he sold out his inter
est to his son Mr A W H Phelps.
The late W H Phelps and family have
been residing at the "Nyth' continu
ously for the past 48 years, their
original dwelling being but a slab hut,
which was used as quarters for the
stockmen when 'Nyth' was grazing
land for the Hollow station, owned by
Messrs. Rawson Bros., and later cut
up into farms. Rawson Bros.
dwelling and the slab hut at that tlnie
were the only two dwellings in what
is known now as Mirani district. The
funeral on Thursday morning was
attended by about 50 cars and four
sulkies, conveying sympathisers to the
graveside in Mirani cemetery where
over 100 assembled to pay their last
tribute of respects to the remains of
the old gentleman.
