Personal Notes:
The son of Donald and Christine nee McDonald, Alexander emigrated from Tobermoray, Scotland to Sydney, Australia aboard the same ship, the "British King", that his future wife Chrissie and her parents and siblings travelled on. The ship sailed from Port Tobermory, Scotland and arrived at Port Jackson on 28 February 1839. His shipping papers state that he was a tailor by trade and also was a shepherd. He could read and write English and Gaelic. His parents were from Lochaber, Invernesshire, Scotland.

Alexander and Christie were married at "Nimitybell, Manaroo", (as it was spelt on the certificate), by Father Michael Kavanagh, of Queanbeyan and Minister of Queanbeyan, on 17 June 1847. Alexander signed his name and Christie made her mark. The witnesses to the marriage were Patrick Stanton of Nimitybell and Donald McDonald of Nimitybell. Father Kavanagh witnessed all of the signatures and marks. Signed M. Kavanagh, Roman Catholic Minister, Queanbeyan.
Alexander and Christie took up "Glen Allen" Station south of the township of Nimmitabel on the left hand side of the highway on the way to Bombala. He continued to practise his trade as a tailor for the clan and trained his daughter Catherine who later ran a very prosperous tailoring and dressmaking business in Bega. He was recognised as being fluent in the Gaelic language, even though most of the clan spoke Gaelic. Christie passed on her skills in cures and medicines from plants and herbs, including the Scotch thistle.
Alexander McDonald died on the 23rd January 1900 at "Glen Allen", Holts Flat, Nimmitabel NSW. According to his Death Certificate, his age was given as 86 years and 10 months. The informant was his son Angus Joseph McDonald whose address at that time was Glen Allen, Holts Flat NSW. The cause of death was primarily, senile decay and his doctor was Dr Edward Nugent, who last saw him on 19th January 1900, only 4 days before Alexander died. Alexander was buried in the Catholic portion of the new cemetery at Nimmitabel. The undertaker was Ronald McDonald. There was no priest present at the burial but 2 of the people who attended the funeral were the witnesses Samuel McDonald JP and Samuel Rankin. Alexander was born in Inverness Scotland and had been in NSW for 61 years. He was 32 years of age when he married Christina McDonald at Nimmitabel NSW. He left 11 living children and 1 male deceased. His occupation was given as tailor.
