Son of James and Mary nee Packett.

The Albury Banner and Wodonga Express (NSW : 1871 - 1938) Fri 7 Jul 1916
A very sad drowning fatality occurred on Friday last, Mr. Alfred Back, aged 33, being the victim. It appears Messrs. Vickery, Hillier and Back constructed a boat for the purpose of crossing the flooded waters at Gocup Creek to assist stock. About 1 o'clock 'they decided to return
home to lunch, and coming in contact with an embankment, Messrs. Vickery and Hillier scrambled out, Mr. Back slipping down the bank in the endeavour to land. He wore a pair of long gum boots which proved a great handicap, and also seemed to lose his presence of mind, as he tried to swim against the stream. Mr. Vickery quickly went to his rescue, at the same time calling out to Mr. Back to swim down stream, but evidently ho did not hear him. Mr. T. Vickery had almost reached his unfortunate mate, when he suddenly disappeared.
Sergeant Costello was immediately apprised of the occurrence and he, with Constables Hanley and Taylor, went to search for the. body. After searching for hours, the body was found about mid-day the next day (Saturday). Deceased was the son of Mr. and Mrs. James Back, sen.of Gilmore.
