Daughter of John and Maria Married James in 1879 Tumut with 7 children born of this union. The Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950) Tue 12 Jan 1937 OBITUARY MRS. JAMES BACK One by one the very early pioneers of these districts are passing the Rubicon, until to-day the survivors are very few indeed. The last to join the great majority was that grand old lady, revered by all in the Gilmore Valley in particular and the towns and district generally, Mrs.Mary Back, relict of the late James Back, of Marble Hill, Upper Gilmore, who had reached the advanced age of 82 years, she passing peacefully away at 5 p.m. on Tuesday last at her residence. Deceased was a native-born, being a daughter of the late Mr and Mrs William Packett, amongst the very early settlers on Bombowlee. In 1869 she married James Back, son of the late Mr and Mrs. William Back, of Gocup, where they farmed for four years, before removing to Gilmore. Ten years after their marriage Mr James Back selected at Marble Hill, Upper Gilmore, and there they resided for the rest of their lives, rearing a family of sturdy sons, scions of yeoman stock, and daughters, who carried the heritage of sterling parents whose high repute they still maintain. One of the family, A. H. Back, was drowned in a flood at Gocup 22 years ago, and the survivors, in their order in the family, are James W. ('Rose Vale,' Gilmore),Annie (Mrs. Arthur Hogan of Kyogle), Albert, Francis H., Arthur J., Misses Amelia. J. and Ella M.(all of 'Marble Hill') . Of the family to which she belonged only Mrs.E. Gear and Mr William Packett remain. Deceased had a healthy and vigorous life, and despite her weight of years, only early in last year did the ravages of time show their dire effects on her robust constitution to a marked degree. About mid-December her waning life commenced to give her family great concern, for it was apparent that the frail tenement of a bright and glorious soul was in a state of decay. But it was only a few days before her demise that she was confined to her bed, with loving daughters to attend to her every want, as was their wont during the declining years of her existence. The Back family, led by so noble a mother, were noted for their hospitality and charitableness; and a fine example worthy of emulation was set by both parents for them to follow. Church and war work during the Great War were amongst her most zealous occupations. The funeral took place on Wednesday last, a large cortege following the hearse bearing the cof fined remains, over which were a wealth of floral tributes, to the place of sepulchre in the C. of E. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery, Rev.S. Broadfoot, Rector, conducting the burial service, and Mr C. W. Burt carrying out the mortuary arrangements. The casket-bearers were Messrs. James, Albert, Francis and Arthur Back (sons), William Callaway and Jas. Naughton. |
