ANNIE CLEE nee Maher

Annie Maher was born on 26 February 1841 at Appin, near Sydney in New South Wales. Her parents John Maher and Catharine nee Mullins moved to the Tumut area in the mid 1850's. Annie married William Clee (son of Richard Clee and Eliza nee Belsham at the young age of fifteen on 17 October 1856. Their marriage was the fifth one recorded in the Tumut Registers.

William and Annie worked for some years for J A Broughton before selecting their own land at Meadow Creek, Gocup via Tumut. There were fourteen children born between 1857 and 1887 - Richard m. Annie French; William; James; Mary m. Hughie McKinnon; Annie m. Thomas Kendall; Elizabeth m. James Duffy; Frances m. Henry French; John; Margaret m. James Patton; Charles m. Millie Green; Walter m. Ethel Kemp; Kathleen m. Matthew French; Gertrude; Andrew m. Annie Clout.

ln Annie's obituary it states, "she was a kindly and charitable soul, and by her many thoughtful and sacrificing acts when in health relieved many a poor sufferer."

Due to her ill health Annie moved from the Meadow Creek farm to a residence in Merrivale Street a couple of years before her death to enable her to be close to medical aid.

Annie died in Tumut aged 69, on 23 September 1910 and is buried in the Roman Catholic section of the Pioneer Cemetery at Tumut.
