- Notes: William Clee Jnr. was born in 1838. In 1856 he was married to Annie Maher of Appin. It was one of the first marriages recorded in the Marriage Register at Tumut.
They were employed for fourteen years working for J .A. Broughton on his Gocup station. In the early sixties William selected a farming property at Meadow Creek. He was regarded as the foremost rough rider and horseman in the district. They had seven sons and seven daughters. The sons of William and Annie Clee were; >Richard Clee, >James Clee, >William Clee, _ > Charles Clee, ‘ >Walter (Wally) Clee, ‘ >Andrew Clee, >Archibald Clee, who died in childhood. and the daughters of William and Annie Clee were; >Mary Clee (married Hugh McKinnon), >Annie Clee (married Tom Kendall), >Millie Clee (married Harry French) >E11zabeth Clee (married James Duffy), >Margaret Clee (married James Patton), >Katherine Clee (married Matthew French), >Gertrude Clee (died in childhood). One of their sons, Wally Clee, recalls that he and his brothers assisted in the farm work. The wheat was reaped by hand sickle hook and hay crops cut by scythe. The wheat was threshed at the farm by spreading the sheaves around on a large tarpaulm when one of the boys would then ride a draught horse round until all the grain was trodden from the stalks. Wally Clee will be remembered by some of the old hands. Now 86 (in 1967) and living at Glebe, he was for thirty-two years employed working and conducting the Mill dairy and butter factory for Dr. H.W. Mason at T umut. He married Ethel Kemp, a daughter of Robert Kemp of Newtown, Tumut. His brother Andrew Clee worked with him at the factory. After residing for thirty years and working the property at Meadow Creek, William Clee sold it to his eldest son Richard Clee. Daniel Clee, a great grandson of the original William Clee still worked the property in 1967. |
