Personal Notes:
Vi incorporated her mother's maiden name of FITCH when naming her third son, Robert Fitch Ross born 13 Feb 1928 at Young.
His great-grandfather Edward Fitch was born 14 Dec 1830 in Whitechapel, London and wed Janet MACKAY from Shoreditch in 1854. Edward, Janet and infant son George arrived in Melbourne about 1856, then lived at Kyneton and Daylesford.
Edward was a painter and decorator and had a further six Australian-born children. The eldest of these was Elizabeth 1857 who married John McGEOCH in 1879. By one of those quirks of fate, in the mid-1960s, her great-grandson Peter McGeoch was in the same class at Newcastle Boys High as John Elworthy, a great-grandson of her sister Hannah.
Hannah Maria Ellen Jane born 03 May 1871 at Daylesford, was only 21 when she married 32 year-old English-born police constable Frank HANSEN at Urana, NSW on 02 Jul 1892.
After postings in various towns in the south west slopes area, with their three children Viola 1893, Olive 1895 and Frank 1898, the Hansens were transferred to Gundagai in 1909 and remained there until retirement in 1920.
Rob attended Bengarralong School, enjoyed a carefree life on the farm and happily joined in the escapades of his big brother Bill and sister Betty. Once Bill built a boat to sail on the Tumut River - but he and Rob managed to tip it over and almost drowned themselves!
When it was time for high school at Tumut, he boarded with Mrs Adams, the sister of Miss Kindred where Bill and Betty boarded. Rob also attended school in Canberra then had a brief spell on his O'Brien aunt and uncle's Windsor dairy farm.
He did a plumbing apprenticeship at neighbouring Richmond Air Base and boarded with three spinster sisters who absolutely adored him. Returning to Gundagai in the early 19505, he farmed Boondilla, between Braemar and Burrenderry though he continued to live at Burrenderry until his marriage.
In January 1951 a new Sister suddenly appeared on the scene at Gundagai Hospital (secretly summoned there by Rob's sister Betty). Barty had met and taken a great liking to Helen ROBINSON whilst doing obstetrics at Launceston - and she lost no time in introducing her bachelor brother to 'Robbie'!
Born at Yorketown, SA, Helen was one of eight brothers and sisters (including twins) who were orphaned when she was only nine. Raised by her maternal grandparents and an aunt, Helen attended Yorketown Primary and Area Schools.
During the war years she worked on her grandfather's farm then did nurse training at Royal Adelaide Hospital from 1945 to 1949. Helen studied infectious diseases at Northfield Hospital then in 1950 went to Queen Victoria Hospital in Launceston for obstetrics training.
At Easter 1952 she left Gundagai and went to Sydney but later that year returned to nurse at Valmar Midwifery Hospital in Tumut. It wasn't long until she and Rob became engaged.
Rob was an excellent shot and an enthusiastic clay-pigeon shooter. In 1953 he "had the distinction of winning the coveted 50-bird badge ... when he shot 58 birds straight". Rob's name figures largely in the prize list - although he was beaten in one event by big brother Frank!
