ISARAH JANE PIPER nee Hibbins
by Margaret Thatcher My great grandmother Sarah Jane Piper was born on 17 October 1843, second child of James and Charlotte Hibbins nee Boss in Oakham, Rutlandshire, England. At 10 years of age Sarah emigrated to Australia with her parents and three brothers, James 12, William 7 and Joseph 2. The family embarked on the Beiapore and arrived in the colony on 9 February 1853. After arriving in this district James and Charlotte entered the employ of Mr. J.B. Sharp on his property Greenhills Station at Adelong. Later the family moved to Bombowlee and settled on a farm there. It is not known where the children were educated or whether more children were born to the family. At the age of 16 Sarah married Alexander (Red Alex) Piper who was born in Belfast, Co. Down, lreland in 1829. The wedding took place on 19 October 1859 at Bombowlee, Tumut, according to the rites of the Presbyterian Church, the celebrant being Patrick Fitzgerald and the witnesses were Thomas Piper and Charlotte Hibbins. At the time of their marriage Sarah was engaged in home duties and Alexander was a farmer. Twetve children were born to Sarah and Alexander. All but one of the surviving children married into local families and during the following years these marriages produced 50 grandchildren for Sarah and Alexander, many of whom still live in this district. Alexander and Sarah owned farming land at Mundongo and it was stocked with sheep, cattle and horses and they were also involved in crop growing. They built a substantial brick residence and made many improvements on the property. Hard times befell the family towards the end of the nineteenth century forcing them to sell the property. At about this time for reasons unknown, Sarah moved to Rookwood to live with her daughter, Jessie (Mrs George Kibblewhite) and remained there until her death at the age of 72 years on 30 August 1915 and was buried in Rookwood Cemetery. Alexander moved to Gilmore Creek to live with his son, William James, until he died on 8 April 1904.
