The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers’ Adviser 27 Mar 1906
Death of Mrs. Robt. McAlister. On Friday last at 1.15 a.m., at her residence, Newtown, Tumut, Mrs. Robert McAlister, after 15, months' weary illness from heart affection, crossed the borderland of Eternity, at the age of 57 years. During her illness she was attended by Dr. Mason, who did his utmost to mitigate her trouble, but kind nursing and every possible attention proved fruitless, and the inevitable Reaper gathered in another to the great majority. The deceased was the fifth daughter of the late Mr. David Clout, and came with him to Tumut in the year 1863. The Clout family, we believe, can lay claim to the largest family connection in Tumut ; in fact it is hard to point out those with whom they are not related in some way. The subject of our obituary was a preserving and energetic woman, a fond wife, and affectionate mother, whose main interest was the welfare of her children. In her last days life was a burden grevious to be borne and death came as a happy release. She leaves behind her a sorrowing husband, 6 sons and 8 daughters to mourn their loss. As the poets says: Thou art gone to the grave—but 'twere wrong to deplore thee, When God was thy Ransom, thy Guardian and Guide; He gave thee, and took thee, and soon will restore thee; And death hath no sting, since the Saviour hath died. The funeral, which was largely at tended, took place on Saturday last. Her remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the new cemetery. Mr. H. W. Hoad was the undertaker, and Archdeacon Owens Mell officiated at the grave. We join with the community in extending our deepest sympathy to the bereaved ones. |
