MR. CHARLES CLOUT SR. Yet another of the old identities of Tumut, a connecting link with the old pioneers of the district, in the person of Mr Charlie Clout sr., crossed the Rubicon on Sunday, morning of last week, at the age of 84 years and 6 months, after an illness of only five days. He was working in the garden on the previous Monday morning and collapsed in the afternoon, and never rallied. Deceased was a son of the late David Clout, born in Goulburn, and came to Tumut with his parents about 1858 or 1859. First he engaged in farming on Petfield and later selected under the Sir John Robertson Act at Rosemount, Brungle, the property now held by Mr. George Clout jr., whose father bought it from Mr. C. Clout, his brother, 13 years ago, when the subject of this obituary retired and went to Sydney to live, forming the nucleus of the Rosemount Estate. He married Janet Regent, another member of an original sturdy stock, who came to the district with her parents, when she was 6 years old. The issue by the marriage were John, Fanny (Mrs C. French jr.), Harriett (Mrs. George King), Charles, George W., Frank, Ernest, Edgar, Miss Ella and Lloyd, who, with a widow, mourn their revered father's demise. Messrs William Clout (Tumut), and David (Marrickville) and Mrs. J. A. Atkinson sr. (Tumut Plains) are brothers and sister. The remains were interred in the Church of England portion of the Rookwood Cemetery on May 28. |
