Personal Notes:
Peter was born Joachim Martinus AAS (pronounced ORSE) at Trondheim, Norway in 1860 and arrived in Australia in Nov 1882 as a merchant seaman on the Sterlingshire. He changed his name when he was naturalised at Homestead on 18 Oct 1889. Letters home must have given a glowing account as his sister Inger Anna AAS also migrated to Australia about 1898.

During his life in Australia Peter worked as a timber cutter and teamster, operated the Railway Refreshment Rooms at Homestead from 1902-1907, was a hotel-keeper at Selwyn and when the Mt Elliott mine closed down, he moved his Mt Elliott Hotel from Selwyn to Cloncurry in 1916, renaming it The Cosmopolitan Hotel. Peter was also a sugar-cane farmer at Jarvisfield from 1920.
An obituary in the Delta Advocate said he was involved in local matters. He was chairman of the District Hospital, State School Committee, Progress Association, Cemetery Trust, etc. He was "admired by all for his tireless energy. A man and a gentleman, his thoughts were always of others, never of himself."

A Worthy Settler - Peter Martin Johnson (By 'Viator' in Cummins & Campbell's Monthly Magazine)
It is over thirty years since I first met P.M. Johnson. He was then conducting a flourishing business in the Homestead Railway Refreshment Rooms.

Some years later, in the Cloncurry district, he called on me when he was on his way out to inspect an hotel property at Mount Elliott. At that time the copper mine was a hive of industry and I advised Mr Johnson that the prospects were first class.

Shortly afterwards he closed for the purchase, and he found everything as I had told him. When the railway construction camps made their appearance there was a great boom; and by way of diversion, a beer strike was organised. It improves the quality of liquor when you take it on the quiet. But Mr Johnson had a great run at Mount Elliott where he was ably assisted by his wife and eldest daughter. At that time the rest of his numerous family were in the school stage and younger.

When the mine closed down at Mt. Elliott Mr Johnson made a shift to Cloncurry, where he built the Cosmopolitan Hotel. Here he did a good trade till unfortunately the building was destroyed by fire. He then turned his attention to sugar growing and in the Ayr district the Kia Ora Farm was purchsed in 1920. Here he remains with his family-what are left of them. How the world changes! The family consisted of a baker's dozen - thirteen. Four of the girls are married and the youngest remains at home. Two of the sons are school teachers, and three are assisting on the farm. one boy died at an early age in the Cloncurry Hospital and the eldest son was Captain Johnson of the 25th battalion. He saw service in Galliploi, and in 1916 he was killed on a French battlefield. Many Townsville men will remember him. As Christian Johnson he won a scholarship and attended the Townsville Grammar School. Here he became known by the classical name of Ben Johnson. On finishing his education, he entered the service of the AMP Company, from which he enlisted for the War.

It is a remarkable fact that seven of Mr Johnson's sons won scholarships and attended the Townsville Grammar School. The good old name remained on the School books for 23 years. At some periods there were two Johnson boys in attendance. Last month 'Viator' was pleased to renew acquaintance with Mr P.M. Johnson, who was up in Townsville for a holiday. Let us see. Kia Ora is the Maori for Good Luck.

Omission must not be made of the name of Mrs P.M. Johnson, who was one of the most popular and charitable women in the West. She died at Chilligoe in 1929 when on a visit to her eldest daughter Mrs Nicholls.

Obituary from newspaper - 1935.
Another well known and highly regarded resident of the district to pass away during the holiday season was Peter Martin Johnson, cane farmer of Kia-Ora, Jarvisfield whose death occurred at 2:45 am on Boxing Day.

The late Mr Johnson fell victim to shaking palsy a few years ago, but had been confined to his bed for less than a fortnight before his demise. Born in Trondhjem, Norway, on 5th August 1860, he received a good education, but desiring to see other parts of the world, took to sea-faring for a few years, finally leaving the "Stirlingshire" in Clevland Bay on 9th November, 1882. Making inland along the railway line with a fellow sailor, he eventually settled at Homestead, where he carried on timber getting and contracting for many years, thus becoming well known also in Pentland and Charters Towers. With other residents he helped to build the first school at Hoestaed and was Chairman of the Committee for many years. In January 1890, he was married to Florence Amelia Madden. whose parents were well known in the early days of Millchester, where Mrs Johnson had the distinction of being the first child born. From 1902 to 1907 he had charge of the Railway Refreshment Rooms at Homestaed and in 1909 shifted to Mt Elliott, where the Mt Elliott Hotel had been purchased. Taking great interest in the local matters, he held positions such as Chairman of the District Hospital and State School Committees, Progress Association, Cemetery Trust and other bodies. in 1911, a new Mt Elliott Hotel was built, being a two storey structure, and when the Mt Elliott Mine closed down the hotel was shifted to Cloncurry, whee it was known as the Cosmopolitan Hotel, opening in July 1916.

Of a large family, two are dead, Captain Christian Martin (Ben) being killed in action in France in 1916, and Edmund Barton who died from typhoid fever in 1911.

In 1920, "Kia Ora" Fram, Jarvisfield was purchased, and since that time Mr Johnson had been an ardent cane farmer, being admired by all for his tireless energy. A man and a gentleman, his thoughts were always of others and never of himself. The members of his family left to mourn are - Anna (Mrs Nichols) and Oscar at Mt Isa, Hilda (mrs Miley), Inez (Mrs A Smith); Greta, Alf, Harold, and Eddie at Kia Ora farm; Les at Brooks Road, State School, Millaa Millaa; Norman at Babinda State School; and Florrie (Mrs P Bryan) at Ayr. There are twelve grand-children, and a sister Mrs W Fox lives at Koumala, near Mackay. Mrs Johnson died in 1929, whilst holidaying in Chilligoe.

"the endings of names as with ‘sen’ in Norway and ‘son’ in Sweden. Even though Peter Johnson had the ‘son’ I knew from your web site that he was Norwegian so it would originally have been ‘sen’ and soon had a quick lesson in Johnsen for ‘son of John’. I was able to confirm a couple of generations back from Johanna but came to a stop with going any further back from John Andersen. This was because I knew, from the surname, that his father’s name would be Anders, but according to the Vital Records, Anders’ surname was Klaegstaedt and that surname doesn’t exist, at least not as far as I can identify so far . I also know that the ‘added’ Norwegian surnames are usually topographical (as in ‘Aas’ is a small mountain or hill so John Anderson would literally be ‘John, son of Anders, who lived near the hill’). Johanna Mathilde, appears with the surname of Carlsen which she adopted from her father Ingebrigt Carlsen ......on the VR she is Johanna Mathilde Ingebrigtsdatter. The father of Ingebrigt Carlsen appears on various records as Carl Jensen/ Carl Jensen Sortomme/Carl Sortomme. One researcher discovered that “Sortomme”, while sounded French rather than Norwegian, was actually the name of a large farm in Norway so, once again some families assumed it as a topographical identifier."
