Personal Notes:
Not much is known of the early days of Henry St John Jnr. He had moved to Sydney and it was probably through his occupation as a draper that he met the young Isabella Elworthy whose older sister Eliza had also married a draper John Holloway.
Following their marriage, Henry and Isabella made their way up to Rollands Plains (probably to his parents), where their first child Isabella Honora was born on 16 Jul1860 but sadly died of diarrohea at Surry Hills in December that year. Two years later in 1862 they were living at Riley Street, Surry Hills when baby Henry St John arrived on 12 June.
Perhaps influenced by his brother Julian who had joined the Force on 27 Aug 1862, Henry became No 1200 in the N.s.W Police Force on 09 Mar 1863. The Police Register says he was 5'10" with blue eyes, brown hair, fresh complexion, C of E, married and a draper.
Tragically, on 14 Api 1863, baby Henry St John succumbed to convulsions and died at 26 Cooper Street, Surry Hills. The young couple was devastated at the loss of both their babies and in May Henry asked for a transfer to the Northern District, taking up duties at West Kempsey on the Mac1eay River on 15 May that year.
Just a year after baby Henry's death, the young parents endured the misery of seeing their third child die. Adelaide Louise (named for her aunt) was born at West Kempsey on 28 Api 1864. Henry's sisters Mrs Adelaide DUCAT and Mrs Eveline BETTS both lived in the area and would have given support to the young bereaved couple - but it was all a bit much to bear and Henry resigned from the force on 31 Aug 1864.
They apparently stayed in the district though and perhaps some emergency arose as Henry was again briefly in the force from 14-20 Feb 1865. In 1863 there had been a major flood with loss of ten lives. Henry's son Julian Edward MADDEN recalled hearing his father talk about how he was out all night rescuing families from the flooded Macleay River.
Isabella and Henry had endured so much sadness in their short married life and turned their eyes towards a better life in another area - Queensland! The magnetic glitter of gold may also have drawn them steadily northwards.
In his 1950 letter their son Julian, born 1869, said "My father and mother left Sydney to go exploring, thinking to find a fortune in gold. My father then 21 years old and getting over five pounds per week wages, was employed by Farmer & Jyles. They bought horses, saddles - both riding and pack, also rifles and revolvers. All their belongings were on the horses' backs and they rode through NSW into Queensland.
"When the Cape River Gold Diggings Gold Rush (near Pentland, south-west of Charters Towers) broke out, they decided to go on through blacks-infested country along a tree-blazed track - no wheel tracks, only a bridle track. What a journey! I think they have the honour of being the only 'man and wife' to do the journey on horseback and lead pack horses. They had a few narrow escapes from the blacks. How many would like to take that long trail today?"
One of Julian's sons wrote: "They journeyed for three years living off the land, contending with aboriginals, fording rivers and overcoming many hardships. It is not difficult to imagine the traumas experienced by these two brave pioneers, especially the mother."
At last they reached Cape River goldfield near Charters Towers where Alice Eveline, born 28 Dec 1866 at Emu Creek was baptised. To their great relief and joy - she survived. There were few settlements in that part of the country and life must have been very tough for the young couple.
When Julian Edward arrived on 16 June 1869, a storm blew away their shelter and rain poured down on mother and baby. A lady camped nearby assisted with the delivery. His son, Julian George, said Henry and Isabella lived the best way they could, Henry cutting timber and mining for gold. The few miners wore guns and knives - to protect themselves and their gold claims.
When the local butcher raised his prices, the miners protested by putting a large rope around the shop - then pulled it over!
By 23 Mar 1873 when Florence Amelia came into the world, the small family had moved on to Millchester, about three miles from Charters Towers and in today's measurement 1320 km north-west of Brisbane - a real frontier town!
She was followed by Lilian May 1875 (no further details); Henry George 1878; James born 1880 who only lived five days; Ernest Charles 1881 who never married and died of concussion in 1928; Ida Helena 1883 and Eva Rosina 1887.
I have well over 300 descendants of Isabella and Henry indexed but there must be many, many more. As the records I have on some of the descendants are only to the 1950s, 60s and 70s, there will be whole new generations to be listed!

Henry was educated in Sydney and later fond employment there. Isabella and he were married in 1860. Marriage certificate has his occupation as 'Clerk' aged 23 (I think he was 20) father as 'doctor' but name not given - mother Honora

In 1897, Isabella left Henry and went to Auckland,New Zealand with her youngest daughter Eva and died there in 1921. Henry then married Mrs Rosina Walker who had been looking after him. He died in 1922.
