Personal Notes: |
The Tumut Advocate 12 May 1903
After about four months of patient suffering, at the ripe old age of 67 years, there passed away from all she held most dear on earth a fond wife, a true, kindhearted and noble mother, in the person of Mrs. John Bridle, wife of Mr. John Edward Bridle, of Bowlers' Flat. The cause of death was gall stones. Since Tuesday last, the poor sufferer was in an unconciuoius state, and at 10 p.m. on Friday she expired, evidently in great pain. Dr. Mason did all her could to alleviate her trouble, but the relentless Reaper claimed his own, and there was called away, in the presence of her husband, six sons (a son, Mr. E. J. Bridle, arrived a few hours late from Callabah, near Bourke) and four daughters, a kind hospitable soul, universally respected and esteemed. Deceased was the first the Rev. Samuel Fox (the first incumbent at Tumut) married. She had nine sons and six daughters. Two of the sons and two daughters predeceased her. She was a native of Brighton, England, and was married at Tumut when 19 years of age. Her eldest son, Mr. E. J. Bridle, who has been residing at Callabah Station (through official carelessness at the post-office there) was unable to arrive here till Saturday last, too late to see his mother (whom he had not seen for 11 years) alive. The funeral took place on Sunday last, when the largest cortege of mourners we have seen for some time paid the last tribute of respect to the departed. Mr. H. W. Hoad carried out the duties of undertaker, and the Rev. T. E. Owens-Mell officiated at the grave, and at the conclusion of the service gave a most touching address which must have proved particularly consoling to the bereaved ones, to whom we tender our deepest sympathy. And with the morn those angel faces smile Which we have loved long since, and lost awhile. |
