Personal Notes: |
George Hoad who was born in 1824 (Henry Hoad‘s fourth brother), arrived in Sydney in 1852 with his wife Mary Anne Unstead and after visiting John at Carcoar, walked to Tumut to see Henry who was by then comfortably established. George decided to remain in Tumut and a cart was sent to bring his wife and family from Carcoar. The cart being overloaded, it was necessary for Mrs. Hoad to
walk the 170 miles and carry her infant child the whole way. This was not unusual among the pioneer settlers. When George & Mary Anne Hoad arrived in Tumut their children were; > George Hoad Jnr (born 1848). George Jnr. spent hiss working life as a saddler and harness maker in Fitzroy Street. On 14 October 1878 he married Jane Clout, a daughter of David Clout of Brungle. > Harrie (Harry or Henry) Hoad (born 1850) Harrie Hoad became a builder and undertaker in Tumut. He married Mary Day. Lewis Hoad, the professional tennis player is a great grandson of Harrie Hoad. After the death of his first wife Harrie Hoad married a widow, Emily Mullane, whose maiden name was Kemp. > Susan Ann Hoad (married R. McCallum in 1877 at Tumut). Further additions to the family in Tumut were; >Walter Hoad (born 1856) Walter Hoad, the third son of George Hoad, married Olieve Brownlie in 1880. Olieve’s father constructed the Telegraph Line from Adelong Crossing (now Tumblong) to Tumut and on to Kiandra in 18908. Walter Hoad (like his father) was a stonemason and worked on the construction of the Catholic Church at Tumut prior to 1878. Walter and Olieve reared a family of ten; - Leo James Alexander Hoad born 1881, (married Alice Hewitt), - Olieve Hoad born 1884 (married John Leonard), - Muriel Hoad born 1884 (married John A. Brown), - Gertrude Hoad born 1885 (married George Day), - Eva Hoad (married Joseph Taylor). - Sylvia H.M. Hoad born 1892 (marmed F. Barnett, then later A. Power), - Walter Hoad Jnr. born 1895 (married (Ella Mason, then later S. Monk), - Gladys Hoad (married Roland Slade), - Edna Hoad born 1888 (married Roy Cohen), - Ruth Hoad born 1900 (did not marry). In 1891 Walter Hoad worked at Yarrangobilly Caves. From 1904 to 1919 he was caretaker when he directed and supervised the development of the caves area. When he retired his son Leo became manager and caretaker from 1919 to 1954, >James Hoad (born 1858), >Jemima Hoad (born 1860, married Walter Ball), >Naomi Hoad (born 1863 & remained single), George Hoad soon obtained work in his trade of stonemason, brick making and brick laying. The family lived in F1tzroy Street next to the Oddfellows Hall (later the hall was demolished to create Fuller St.) George Hoad built a two storey house on the corner of F1tzroy Street and Richmond Streets. |
