Personal Notes: |
I found some Jillett Brothers Station records at the State Library Qld some time ago but haven’t been able to go and research them until yesterday.
In a Cassilis Station Cash Book is listed the names and wages paid to employees. What employees you ask ?? Now the BIG news. From 27 October 1894 to July 1896, Mary Cairney and Mrs Cairney (Honora) appear on 9 occasions. Mrs Cairney as a House Keeper on some and Mary Cairney as Cashier on some. So to the question did Tasman Jillett know Mary Norah Elizabeth Maitland Cairney - a very definite YES - she and her mum were employed by him over a period of almost 2 years. The last entry was on 30 July 1896, Mary would have been about 3 months pregnant since Tasman (Gillette) Maitland Cairney was born on 21 December 1896. It appears they might have moved from Kynuna Station (arrived abt 1890) to Cassilis Station in October 1894 (or worked for both at the same time??). I could not find any other reference to them so it appears they must have left and moved to Queenton, Charters Towers about August 1896. The question is did Tasman Jillett know of the pregnancy?? Mary, age 17 years, might not have been showing particularly given the dresses worn at the time. I did not find any large payment to the Cairney family recorded but if it occurred it could have been hidden under another payment title. |
