Birth certificate has 619 Burke St, Surry Hills.
Claimed she had attended the old normal school in Parramatta. In 1895-96 Mary and her mother Honora went for employment to Kynuna Station outside Winton. Mary Nora was 17 or 18. It is very likely that she conceived Tasman wile at Kynuna Station in April 1896. They came to Charters Towers in 1897 where Mary's son Tasman was born - she was 18. She did not tell her family much about her life before she married Joseph. Her description of Kynuna was of Afgan traders and their camel trains which used to go all over the outback. When she was at Kynuna, Banjo Patterson was at Dagworth Station next door. This was where he wrote 'Waltzing Matilda' in 1895, supposedly as an ode to Christine McPherson with whom he had an infatuation After Tasman was born she worked as a dressmaker, trading as Mrs Maitland. After marriage to WJB in 1910, she negotiated the purchase of a house for ₤100 and WJB was very angry because he thought she had incurred a debt that they would never repay! This was the house in School street where the family grew up. |
