Personal Notes: |
Thomas Udney Webb was a native of Norfolk, England and in 1838 when en route to Australia was shipwrecked, but he eventually arrived the same year. He entered into a grazing partnership with a John Jenkins on "Togoo" on the Murrumbidgee near Coolac. Jenkins also had a squatter's run at Lacmalac.
Thomas Webb conducted a school on the farm where John Webb now resides (in 1967). There he also carried on farming pursuits. Thomas Udney Webb and Mary Ann Parmenter married on 5th August 1850 in the Parish of All Saints, Sutton Forest. His wife (Mary Ann Parmenter) was born 11th May 1833 of parents living at Oldbury, Berrima. Both parents were convicts. The Webb family moved tothe Tumut Valley in the period 1853-1856. Thomas Udney Webb died 8th July 1895 at Bombowlee, aged 83, Mary Ann Webb died 19th January 1905 at Bombowlee, aged 71. All the sons followed farming and grazing pursuits. There are many descendants of this early pioneer living in the district. The original property at Bombowlee has been occupied by a Webb for the past 107 years. |
