Personal Notes:
The Tumut and Adelong Times 14 Nov 1933
OBITUARY MRS JAMES HARGREAVES There passed away, at their residence, "Plain View,'' Tumut Plains. on Saturday last at 2 p.m., another of those old district pioneers who have done so much to make the path smooth for those who come after them, in the person of Mrs. Eliza Mary Hargreaves, wife of Mr. James, Hargreaves sr,. at the ripe age of 82 years, heart trouble being the immediate cause of her demise. Deceased, who was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. T. U. Webb, came to Gundagai when quite a girl with her parents, and was out all night is a canoe in the 1852 great flood which submerged the Mumumbidgee flats and covered them with a swirling torrent. Sixty years ago last September, she married Mr. James Hargreaves, of Tumut Plains, and last September, with a legion of relatives around them, they celebrated their diamond wedding. Three weeks prior to her death the doctor was called out to attend her. She recovered from that attack somewhat, but again became ill, but not alarmingly so. Her daughter, who was nursing her, had on Saturday last left her mother for three minutes and when returning to her room she found she had passed away peacefully. The surviving children besides a sorrowing husband, are: Henry (Kunama), Mrs Jas. Kell (Lacmalac), John (Wagga), Miss S. Hargreaves (Tumut Plains), Mervyn (Tumut Plains) and Harold (Blowering). Seven children predeceased her, two when grown up, one at the age of five years, and the other four in infancy. Deceased had a wonderful disposition, was a devoted wife and a loving mother and an agreeable neighbor, and right up to the end of her long career was always thinking of others, and will be greatly missed from The Plains by the many she helped and comforted in their hour of need or distress. The funeral took place on Sunday last, a lengthy cortege following the remains to their resting place in the C. of E. portion of the Tumut New Cemetery, where Rev. A. S. Greville officiated. The casket-bearers were: Messrs Ray Kell, Claude Bevan and Richard Kell (grandsons), Ron. and Bert. Hargreaves (nephews). The chief mourners were: All the living children except John, Mrs. Robt. Eggleton (sister), Mr. Ja. U. Webb (Califat, brother), the only two surviving members of the family to which deceased belonged, Misses E. and C. Webb (Califat), Mrs C. Crowe (Deltroit.), Mrs Ern. Anderson, Miss A. Webb (Tumut) , Mrs. A. Margules (Tomorroma), Mrs. O. Beegling, Mrs. Ron. Brown, Mrs. C. Taylor, (nieces).

This public tree has about 60,100 people. Every person in the tree is related by birth or marriage to at least one other person in the tree - no strays. The people in the tree come mainly from four projects.
  1. My family tree. The original project begun about 1998. ID numbers less than about 6,000
  2. Canberra and Queanbeyan Pioneers. The next 30,000 begun about 2004. Sourced almost entirely from HAGSOC's excellent 'Biographical Register of Canberra and Queanbeyan'. The project began when I decided to add siblings, spouses and parents for a relation with an entry in the Register. 12 years work.
  3. Wagga Pioneers. I moved to Wagga and thought I would extend the Queanbeyan project by adding people from Wagga Wagga & District Family History Society's 'Pioneers of Wagga Wagga and District'. About 10,300 people added over about a year.
  4. Tumut Valley Pioneers. During the COVID-19 pandemic of 2020, I decided to extend the above projects by adding pioneers of the Tumut Valley. Initial sources were Snowden's 'Pioneers of the Tumut Valley' and 'Relict of ... Lives of Pioneering Women of Tumut and District'. Excellent references published by Tumut Family History Group. I've also added material from newspapers of the time - especially, death records, obituaries and weddings from 'Tumut and Adelong Times'. This project is in its early stage and might take a few years. I plan to extend to the upper Monaro (Adaminaby, Kiandra, Cooma, Jindabyne).
I upload new information to this website about every 3 months. My motivation for these projects is to provide public information for people seeking to trace ancestors and what became of them. Much of the information I provide can be difficult to find.
If you find errors - anything incorrect (dates, places, wrong parents, wrong children), and you have evidence, I would love to fix them. Or, if you have information that would extend my projects, do not hestiate to contact me on the email link below. I do not publish information on living people - which means I'm not much interested in people born after about 1920, and I usually distrust material from before about 1770 without extremely good sources.
