- Notes: The Nixon family, who reached Sydney in the 1830s from the North of Ireland, occupied Gregadoo run about twelve miles east of Wagga Wagga in 1844 and grew wheat in the first year. Robert, one of the sons, was apprenticed to Hallons, millers of Sussex Street Sydney, on arrival in the colony and gristed wheat with his own mill at Gregadoo.
At Gregadoo the Nixon family quickly developed a very efficient division of labour. Of course this was a pastoral run, but the varied farm activities had to be divided between family members. Robert, the miller, grew and gristed the wheat with the stone mill which he moved to the village of Wagga Wagga in 1857; his sisters made butter and cheese; and another brother, Charles, tended the vineyard, made the wine and carried some of these products for sale to Sydney each year by bullock wagon.

p106 Robert Nixon, who established his flour mill in 1857, was challenged by other millers in the late 1860s and 1870s, but the wheat industry was then not sufficiently productive for the three mills which existed. Nixon and Chapman rented the Britannia mill at North Wagga Wagga in 1870,98 in fact, in order to close it and so protect their business. The local industry was still capable of meeting local needs. Meanwhile Robert Nixon continued as a leading citizen, serving on the borough council and on the committees.
