The Tumut and Adelong Times 11 Jan 1944
OBITUARY MR. ROLAND D. PIPER The death of the late Mr. Ronald Denson Piper, which occurred at the Tumut and District Hospital Sunday morning last, was a shock to his many relatives and friends throughout the Tumut district. The eldest son of Mr. and Mrs. A. F. Piper of Bombowlee Creek, he came home for a few days at Christmas time from Sydney, where he was employed at Hutton's bacon factory. During his stay in Tumut he sought medical attention for a sprained ankle and subsequently entered the Tumut and District Hospital on Wednesday last, when he underwent an operation for the removal of his tonsils. He had desired the operation to take place so that he could return to his work as soon as possible, but his health was in such a rundown condition that he did not have enough strength to recover from the ordeal and his condition gradually deteriorated, resulting in his death on Sunday. The late Mr. Piper was a native of Tumut and he was a quiet and unassuming young man. He was member of the A.M.F. for nine or ten months and on his discharge secured employment with the Hutton Company. He was 30 years of age, and was unmarried. Besides his sorrowing parents there are five brothers, Clarence (Bombowlee), Arthur (A.M.F.), Edward (Cootamundra), Leo (Earlwood), John (Bombowlee) and two sisters, Bessie (Cootamundra ) and Enid (Bombowlee) surviving. Deepest sympathy is extended to the bereaved in the sad loss they have sustained. The funeral took place yesterday afternoon after a service conducted in the Presbyterian Church by Rev. R. C. Coleman (in the absence of Rev. A. Brown), leaving from the church for the Presbyterian portion of the Tumut New Cemetery. Rev. Coleman officiated at the graveside and Mr. C. W. Burt attended to the funeral arrangements. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Clarence, Arthur, Edward, Leo and John Piper (brothers) and Bob Bye (cousin).
