Joseph William's birth and death certificate gives William's occupation as 'miner'.
Marriage certificate shows living at Westgate Road Death certificate says 23 years in Qld. So, came to Qld in about 1884. Religion:Presbyterian. 1882/3 passenger list for 'Oban Bay' shows William (aged 30) and Isabella (aged 24) Bell with 'Free' passage. Qld Passenger lists (http://members.iinet.net.au/~perthdps@iinet.net.au/shipping/mig-qld3.htm) shows: OBAN BAY Arrived 19 07 1883 in Townsville departed Glasgow 20 03 1883 fiche PL M1699 (imm/178) Lived Hodgkinson Street, Chaters Towers Note: William and Isabella lived in a tent for a while before they got themselves organised into a mine cottage. They had five children. He had a brother who went to Toronto and another who was with the railways in Stockton. Charters Towers council rate book (Qld Archive 06-08-2003) has a William Bell in Mexican St in 1904. |
