Personal Notes:
Samuel Gordon was born on 25 August 1850 at Bundarbo Station near Jugiong. His father, John Gordon was born in 1814, the second son of Samuel Gordon of Tassagh, Ormagh, Ireland, and his wife Jane Acheson. (Tassagh was a grant of land given to William Gordon in 1690).

John Gordon owned Bundarbo Station comprising 50,000 acres near Jugiong. For some years prior to 1848 he owned a number of stations, among them Borambla and Pullitop near Wagga Wagga both of which he purchased from George Macleay. Shortly after John Gordon settled at Bundarbo his father died in Ireland and his mother, sister and two brothers came to Australia. The youngest brother was a Presbyterian Clergyman in Sydney.

John Gordon married Mary Reece and unfortunately she died when Samuel (their only son) was born.

When he was ten years old Samuel Gordon was attending Dr. Large's Boarding School (eueen's Villa) in Richmond Street, Tumut. At the time his uncle Robert Gordon had a grocery shop in Fitzroy Street near the Court House.

When he completed his schooling Samuel became a clerk in a bank at Wagga Wagga, but a little 1ater he accompanied his father and a friend, Mr. Horsfall of Widgewa station, on a trip to England and America. Whilst visiting Windsor Castle he was missing from the party and after a considerable time was located in the nearby stables examining the Queen's "Greys". Throughout his life Samuel Gordon's great love was for animals.

In 1880 Samuel Gordon became the owner of Yarrangobilly Station and that year married Annie Fraser, the daughter of James Fraser, a marine engineer with the Public Works Department. The Gordons had three daughters and one son;

> Mary Gordon,
> Aimee Gordon (married M.J.G. Colyer of Killara),
> Gertrude Gordon (married O.M. Evershed),
> John Gordon.

In 1884 they left Yarrangobilly and took up an area of 172 acres near the foot of Watson's Hill, Gocup.

To Samuel Gordon of Gocup goes the credit of founding the dairying industry on sound and profitable lines. In 1880 he commenced with a particularly fine herd of Ayrshire dairy cattle and in the same year purchased one of the first three Alfa Laval separators imported into Australia. He produced excellent quality butter and cheese which was marketed in Gundagai, Adelong, and Tumut.

For over forty years he continued to improve his property and dairy herds to the extent that in later years an Officer-in Charge of the Dairy Industry Branch of the Department of Agriculture claimed that, in his opinion, Samuel Gordon's Gocup Estate was the best dairying property in New South Wales. He was well qualified to express such an opinion.

In 1884 he purchased from Sir John Hay the whole of his estate at Gocup comprising 2,266 acres with a long frontage to the Tumut River. This was the original Squatters Run taken up by John Archer Broughton. It was all freehold property when Samuel Gordon bought it. On this magnificent land Sam Gordon bred fine thoroughbred horses and Clydesdales. George King later became one of his stud grooms. A considerable portion of the agricultural land was leased to Chinese tenant farmers for growing tobacco. At one stage there were 300 Chinese living on the property.

A family named McDonald managed the dairy farm. The butter and cream produced was sold in Tumut. When the slump came in the tobacco growing industry the tenants produced maize, wheat, oats and other crops much of which was used for the dairy herds.

Samuel Gordon was a keen supporter of the Tumut Turf Club and the A. & P. Society. He bred some good racehorses but did not bet. He regularly drove an American type buggy drawn by four well matched blood bay horses which were admired by everyone who saw them. With his various breeds and types of horses he was a successful competitor at surrounding shows.

Gifted with a power of taming the most vicious outlaw horses it was ironic that whilst riding a perfectly quiet horse, he received critical injuries. While Samuel was riding his favourite show horse "Speculum" at night crossing the Gilmore Creek bridge, the animal became frightened, slipped on the frost laden, smooth bridge decking and fell with its rider. In frantic struggles to regain its feet the horse lashed out several times kicking Samuel as he lay on the decking. He received such severe head injuries that for some days his life was in the balance. He recovered, but was never afterwards able to follow an active life. This accident happened in the later years of his life.

He died at Tumut on 6 July l9l7 . He was one of the most honourable and popular men in the district. The well-kept Gocup homestead, with its fine gardens, lawns, shrubs and gravel driveway, was the show place of the district.
