Obituary LATE MRS. SARAH CHENEY. The death occurred last Friday night of Mrs. Sarah Cheney, of Wagga, relict of the late Mr. Robert Cheney, of Shockaroo Station, and later of Humula, at the age of 80 years and four months. Her husband predeceased her on September 13, 1909. She was born at Yabtree and was a daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Dennis McNamara, of Tarcutta, and formerly of Limerick, Ireland. The deceased's parents were amongst the earliest settlers of the Tarcutta district, McNamara Creek, at Murraguldrie, being named after them. The deceased lady and her late husband were kind friends to many in the early pioneering days and were very highly esteemed by a wide circle of relatives and friends for their many kind acts. She lived in Cramptonstreet, Wagga, for many years, and for some time with Mrs. H. Kendall, one of her daughters. She was the mother of fifteen children, nine of whom are living : James, Ganmain; George, Sydney ; Daniel Dennis, Wagga ; Robert Henry, Borambola ; Alfred Thomas, Ladysmith (sons) ; Mrs. Thomas Wilson, Mrs. William Carroll, Wagga; Mrs. Benjnmin Shoemark, Tarcutta, and Mrs. Harry Kendall, Wagga ; and four sons and two daughters deceased. She also leaves 58 grandchildren and 39 great-grandchildren, and one brother, Mr. Dennis McNamara, of Wagga. The interment took place in the C. of E. portion of the Humula cemetery last Sunday. Funeral MRS. SARAH CHENEY The funeral of the late Mrs. Sarah Cheney, of Wagga, widow of the late Mr. Robert Cheney, senior, formerly of Shockaroo station and later of Humula. took place yesterday, leaving the residence of her son, Mr. Daniel Dennis Cheney, in Peter street, Wagga, at 10.30. The cortege, on reaching Humula, was a very large one, and in cluded relatives and friends of the deceased from Henty, Gamnain, Cara bost, Murruguldrie, Borambola, Coreinbob, Oberne, Humula, and Wagga. The interment was in the family ground in the Church of England Cemetery, Humula, alongside the grave of her husband. The carriers were Messrs. Benjamin Shoemark and William Carroll (sons-in-law), Christopher Cheney (nephew), Patrick Nugent and William T. Nugent. The pall-bearers were Messrs. Daniel Dennis Cheney, James Cheney, Robert Cheney, and Alfred Thomas Cheney (sons), Herbert; Cheney and Dennis Daniel Cheney (grandsons), and Daniel Cheney (nephew), and Thomas Nugent. The Rev. J. Campbell conducted a very impressive burial service, after which he made feeling reference to the long and good life of Mrs. Cheney, and to the relatives and friends who had travelled many miles, from very distant parts, to pay their last sad tribute of respect which showed, he said, the esteem in which she was held. The chief mourners present were the relatives mentioned above, and her four daughters, Mrs. Thomas Wilson, Mrs. William Carroll, Mrs. Benjamin Shoemark, and Mrs. Harry Kendall, also Mr. Dennis M'Namara, her only surviving brother, and. Mrs. D. D. Cheney, daughter-in-law. There were a number of very old friends present at the house (including Mr. Laurence Cox, who had known the deceased for over 60 years) who were unable to be present at Humula. This coffin was very heavily covered with beautiful floral tributes, sent by relatives and friends in various parts of the State. The funeral arrangements were entrusted to Messrs. M'lntosh Bros, of Wagga. Daily Advertiser Wagga Wagga, NSW Monday 8 March 1926, p.2 |
