Mr. John Cheney, Sen.
The death occurred at his residence "Belmore," Humula, on Saturday night, of Mr. John Cheney, sen., at the age of 87 years. The deceased went to live at Humula in 1840 with his parents, who came from England. He was married twice. His first wife died many years ago, leaving a family of three daughters and two sons. His second wife died some time ago. Mr. John Cheney, jun, of Opossum Plains, Oberne, and Belmore stations, is a son. He is a councillor of the Mitchell Shire. The other son is Mr. Christopher Cheney, Book Book. The daughters are Mrs. R. Nicols, Humula; Mrs. James Cheney, Ganmain; and Mrs. J. S. Adams, Sydney. A townsman who knew the late Mr. Cheney well, says: "Old Jack," as we all called him, was one of the finest bushmen in the State and yarded many a wild horse in the rough country around Humula, Tumbarumba, Kyeamba and Tarcutta. He was a fearless horseman, and knew every tree on the country for miles around his home. Like all his family he was a good friend to everyone in need in the bush. His death means a gap in the ranks of that small and gradually decreasing army of "the real old time bush men."
