OBITUARY - MRS. SARAH ISABELLA QUARMBY On the 24th November there passed away at her home, "Honeysuckle," Batlow West, Mrs. Sarah Isabella Quarmby, relict of the late Mr. Ezra Quarmby and much-loved chatelaine of that farmstead in the hills so well known to people of the neighborhood, for there are not many folk in this locality who have not enjoyed, at some time or other, the hospitality of "Honeysuckle''. Here it was that one could find a true example of the finest characteristics of home and family life, closely knit in one complete and co-operative unit, yet always ready to extend its rare quality to others that might come within its compass. Here is was that for over half a century the subject of this obituary dwelt as mentor and mother to a small community, that time has scattered gradually to different parts of the State. The late Mrs. Quarmby was born at Brungle 77 years ago and moved to Batlow with her parents, the late Mr. and Mrs. Basham when about seven years of age, and in the year 1890 married the late Mr. Ezra William Quarmby, who predeceased her some nine years ago. To this union was born a family of 12 children -seven sons and five daughters, all of whom are living. The sons are Messrs. J. R. (Jack), Will, Percy, Edwin, Sam and Ray, of Batlow, and Wesley (Clandulla), and the daughters Miss Elsie, Batlow, Ethel (Mrs. Newton), Dee Why, Hazel (Mrs. Hutton), Batlow, Agnes (Mrs. Naylor), Kingsgrove, and Milanie (Mrs. Langthorne), Temora. There is one brother and one sister surviving, namely: Mr. Fred. Basham, of Batlow, and Mrs. R. E. Quarmby, of Tumut, and seventeen grandchildren. The late Mrs. Quarmby was of necessity a home-loving woman; yet, despite the numerous cares of maintaining her large family, devoted many a leisure hour to the welfare of organisations that appealed for her assistance, chiefly the Methodist Church, and many examples of her exquisite needlework are treasured by people who possess them. The Batlow Methodist Church Aid Society was one of her special interests, and that this society was enriched in many ways by that interest can be attested by those sharing in the work. Her home was for many years the nucleus of the denomination to which she paid allegiance, the Methodist congregation of Batlow West and Peel's Creek regularly attending church services there. And, apart from this, any charitable movement was at all times assured of substantial help from what may be truly said was a fount of benevolence. The Christian virtues of this long and useful life cannot be too strongly extolled, radiating as it did a warmth that many a lonely heart has felt when the chill of strange surroundings were austere and bleak. The world is poorer because the years have written finis to her good work, but infinitely richer because she lived. After a short service at the Batlow Methodist Church the remains were conveyed to and interred in the Old Cemetery at Tumut, beside her late husband, the Rev. Mr. Dundas officiating at the graveside. Floral tributes were too numerous to particularise and came from the scores of sympathisers and from organisations, all of which have lost a good friend. https://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/article/138986148 |
