Compton, Lydia A., b. 1910, Cooma, New South Wales Her life took a tragic and difficult turn with her husbands death 1 Dec 1911 Tragedy at Paupong; From our Dalgety Correspondent. A shocking tragedy was enacted at Paupong on Tuesday last, when Charles Compton committed suicide. The deceased has been in poor health for a long time and was very melancholy. He visited a Queanbeyan doctor a short time ago in company with a friend, to whom he wrote recently, saying that the medicine was doing no good, that his head was very bad, but that he would try and get through the shearing. A horse had lately been breaking nightly Into a neighbor's paddock, and he usually got up early and brought it back on to his own lands and he threatened to shoot it. On the night previous to his sad end, his wife's sister had stayed with them, deceased occupying a separate room, and on arising in the morning he was missed, also his rifle a 32 Winchester; and part of his clothes was in his room. It was presumed that be had gone after the horse, and his little daughter Ivy was sent to find him, and help him put it back in the paddock. She ran along the road and near the gate, about a quarter of a mile from the house, she found him lying, groaning, in a pool of blood. She ran and informed her mother and aunt, who proceeded to the spot. He was still living, and some time elapsed, before he finally expired; The bullet had entered the forehead between the eyebrows, passing out at the top of the head to the left of the crown. The district coroner (Mr. H. C. Merritt) held an inquest, and after due consideration, brought in a verdict as follows: 'Deceased died from a gunshot wound, self-inflicted, while temporarily insane." Deceased, who leaves a wife and six children, five girls and one boy and who was 50 years of age, was in prosperous circumstances. The remains were buried in Boloco cemetery on Thursday afternoon. Much sympathy is locally expressed for the bereaved family. |
