Monaro, and Cooma and Bombala Advertiser 3 Jun 1921
Death or Mr Thomas Cogan. As reported in the last issue of the Mercury, Mr Thomas Cogan, grazier, of Boloco, Dalgety, met with a serious injury while attending to some draught horses on his holding. It appears that on Friday morning he was catching a horse, prior to taking out his team to draw a number of fencing posts; he had caught a horse by the mane when the animal swung round and pulled away, kicking him just above the right knee. The blow caused a compound fracture of the bone, the upper and lower portions of which protruded through the flesh. He was brought to Cooma, and conveyed to Sydney by train leaving on the evening of Saturday and on arrival was placed in the Jenner private hospital, under the care of Sir Herbert Maitland. His removal was advised in order that the X-ray treatment might be applied prior to the setting of the bone. It may be stated that the horse which inflicted the injury had not previously given any indication of roguish tendency, Mr Cogan having shod it a few days previously. Arriving at the hospital on Sunday, the patient was not considered to be in a condition which would be favourable to an operation on that day, and this was accordingly postponed till the next day. On Monday an anaesthetic was administered, but the patient collapsed and died while under its influence, death being due to heart condition. Mrs Cogan accompanied her husband to Sydney, and returned by rail on Wednesday morning, the remains of her husband being conveyed to Cooma by the same train. The coffin was placed on a car at the railway station, and conveyed to the Dalgety church, where a short service was held. The cortege, which was an unusually large one, then proceeded to the Boloco cemetery, a distance of six miles, where the burial service was conducted by the Rev. Father McGee of Cooma. The bearers Messrs E. Dykes, J. Eccleston, H. P. Faulkner, and W. M. Montague. A number of wreaths were placed on the coffin by relatives and friends, and the gathering at the cemetery was the largest yet seen at an interment there; an evidence of the respect and esteem in which the deceased was held by a wide circle of friends and acquaintances. Many attended from Cooma, Moonbah, Jindabyne, Paupong, Dalgety, Nimmitabel, and the surrounding district, and the greatest sympathy with the members of the family was expressed. The deceased was a son of the late Mr David Cogan, an old resident of the district, who occupied the property previously, and leaves a widow, four sons and two danghters, whose ages range from 7 to 24 years. These are Messrs David, Duncan, Esbert and Louis Cogan and the Misses Florence and Catherine Cogan. Deceased was born on the holding where he had resided all his life, and bred cattle, sheep and horses (blood stock and draught.) Of the latter, Innes Vale took part at the annual and autumn race meetings at Cooma with success. He also bred a good class of draught horse, as many in the district can testify, making periodical visits to Sydney to purchase stud stock. Although not taking an active part in the affairs of the district he was regarded as a valuable settler, and a kindly disposed and desirable neighbour. His sudden demise is regretted by all with whom he came into contact. The funeral arrangements were carried out by Mr C. Wiliis of Cooma. |
