Son of Denis and Isabella Married Elizabeth Carroll in 1892 at Tumut with 6 children born of this union. The Tumut Advocate and Farmers and Settlers' Adviser (NSW : 1903 - 1925) Tue 17 Jan 1905 On Saturday last a gloom spread over the town when it became known that Mr. Stephen Williamson, who owned a nice little property at Windowie, fronting the Gilmore Creek, about 7 miles from Tumut, had breathed his last. Coroner W. J. Shelley went out with Constable Donnelly on Sunday to deceased's place, but did not deem an inquiry necessary. Deceased, who had been suffering from a broken rib sustained in fighting the bush fires, came into town with his son to interview Dr.Mason on Saturday last. The doctor prescribed for him, and he essayed to go home -wards ; but on the way felt faint, and rested for some time by the roadside. Feeling some what relieved, he again got into his buggy and reached home, but died in the space of a few minutes. He had for some time past complained of rheumatism, and it is thought the hot weather and the hard battle he had with the recent bush fires to save his homestead weakened his heart and caused the sudden collapse. He was a fine stamp of the veritable English farmer—energetic, persevering and capable—and for many years resided on 45 acres of land which he purchased on Bombowlee and afterwards sold to Dr. Mason. Leaving there, he became the possessor of the homestead on which he died, and which he improved largely. He arrived at Tumut about 46 years ago, and previous to that was mining at Batlow. He was a true friend, an exemplary neighbor, and one whose cheery face will long be missed here. A native of County Donegal, Ireland, he came to this State as a youth and had the advantage of a good colonial experience. He died at the ripe old age of 65 years. He was followed to his last home on Sunday last by a large cortege of mourners. Mr. W,Himsworth was the undertaker, and Rev. Father Sharkey officiated at the grave. Our sympathy is extended to his sorrowing wife and five young children. |
