DRIVER T. C.OATES DEATH WHILE ABROAD: Wagga's First War Casualty

Mrs. Linda Margaret Oates. of Trail-street, Wagga, yesterday received the following telegram from the Minister for the Army (Senator M'Bride)

"It is with deep, regret that I have to inform you that your husband, Driver Thomas Charles Oates, AIF. abroad, died from injuries on September 2, and to convey to you the sincere sympathy of the Minister for the Army and the Military Board."

The news came as a severe shock to the many relatives and friends in Wagga' and district of Driver Oates and family for Charlie, the name under which he was more familiarly known to his friends, was well and popularly known. The son of Mr. Hugh Oates, several times Mayor of Wagga, and the late Mrs. Oates, he was born in this town on August 15, 1905.

He received his education here and was appointed to the staff of the Commercial Bank of Australia, eventually becoming manager of a branch in Sydney. He returned to Wagga In recent years and entered into business on his own account. Soon after the war broke out he joined the AIF, and was in the transport section when one of the early contingents was sent abroad.

His death records Wagga's first war casualty of the present conflict. In addition to his father he leaves a widow (nee Linda Bance), two small daughters, a brother, Mr. James Oates, a returned soldier of Wagga, and two sisters, Mrs. George Grant (Vera), of

Borambola, and Mrs. Ken Martin-Smith (Bella), of Manly. Another brother, Tyson, died some years ago.

The sympathy of the community will be extended to his family and other relatives.
