Sentenced to death for burglary and felony on 8 Feb 1837. Transported to Australia on Calcutta 15 April 1837
From Wiki Tree https://www.wikitree.com/wiki/Archer-2605 Biography William Archer was a convict after the Third Fleet transported to New South Wales William Archer was aged about 20 when he was tried in Louth (possibly also in Dublin) on 8 February 1837 and found guilty of burglary and felony of money. His sentence was death but this was later commuted to transportation for life to Australia. William travelled to New South Wales on board the Calcutta arriving in August 1837. William was a servant and indoor labourer at the time of conviction. He was not married and had a prior conviction for which he had served six months in prison. William was five feet nine inches tall with a ruddy and freckled complexion, light hair, hazel eyes and scars on his left eyebrow, right cheekbone and bridge of his nose. The Irish records also stated that William's parents were deceased. "Convicts father who was an attorney resided in Philipsburgh Avenue, Dublin. Other defendant: James Dunne (or Dunn)." Also convicted alongside William and James were Thomas Murphy and James O'Meara. All the men received a death sentence. They had broken into the house of Mr John Cornwall of Rutland Square (now Parnell Square) in Dublin. In addition to the theft of money, the gang had also stolen some articles of wearing apparel and a thimble. The bank notes, bills and gold stolen added up to £560 which probably explains the death sentence. An acquaintance of William (Bridget Oakes) gave evidence at the trial, including that he had handed over bank notes to her. According to the convict musters, William was stationed in Parramatta in 1837.[8] |
