The Tumut and Adelong Times (NSW : 1864 - 1867; 1899 - 1950) Tue 20 Jun 1933
MR. A. W. LEVETT
Yet another of the pioneers of the Tumut district has passed the Rubicon, when on Friday last, at the age of 80 years, Mr. Arthur W. (Clair) Levett succumbed to a heart attack in the Tumut and District Hospital Deceased has been a sufferer, off and on, for the last three or four years, and a few months ago his life was despaired of, but he rallied and pulled through in Sisters Harris and Wilkinson's Sefton Private Hospital. The last attack, however, he was unable to ward off. For the past three years, he having been rendered by old age incapable of doing anything, he was finally tended by his daughter, Mrs. Ern. A. Anderson, of "Yara,'' Bombowlee, but his familiar figure in town and jovial manner became less and less prominent, though he delighted in a heart-to-heart chat with the few of his old cobbers left of those old residents of his generation. Almost, all his life he followed farming and gardening pursuits and when he had to give up he was followed by his son, George, who added tobacco-growing and or charding to his activities. He was a genial old soul, as "straight as a rush'' in all his dealings, and popular with all classes of the community. His wife predeceased him some 20 years ago. The surviving children are Mrs. Ern. Anderson (Tumut), Mrs. A. Hammond (Brisbane), John (Sydney). George (Tumut), for whom the deepest sympathy is felt in their sad bereavement. Mrs. Stephen White, of Bethungra, is a sister. The funeral took place on Saturday afternoon, the remains having laid to rest in the C. of E portion of the New Cemetery, Rev. F. W. Rettie officiating at the graveside. The coffin-bearers were Messrs. Joe, Ned and Clair Levett, Harold Hagreaves, R. S. Hargrae-ves (nephews), Ern. Anderson (son-in-law) .
