William Kiley came to Australia in 1837. In 1840 he and Edward Hughes settled on Pastoral Run No. 95 at Spring Creek. The property was afterwards called "Kiley‘s Run" and then "Red Hill". This is the property which was the subject of Banjo Patterson's poem, "Kiley's Run".

The late Mr. William Kiley, of Tumut, bequeathed the sum of £100 towards building a convent at that place. Messrs. Kiley Bros., sons of the deceased, have promised handsome donations. The Gundagai Times and Tumut, Adelong and Murrumbidgee District Advertiser (NSW : 1868 - 1931) Fri 3 Feb 1882 Another very old resident of this district has passed away. On Wednesday morning, the 1st instant, at his residence, Spring Creek, Mr.William Kiley, senior, departed this life at the ripe age of 70 years, deeply respected by all who knew him. He was one of the pioneers of this neighborhood. In the year 1839 he came to Coolac; but, after spending two years there, he came to Spring Creek, which has been his home for the last 40 years. The deceased was of a liberal disposition, and from time to time he made handsome offerings to the Roman Catholic Church, of which he was a very consistent member. Up to the last the deceased retained full possession of his faculties, and, though in feeble health, he conversed upon various topics with his family on Tuesday evening, and retired early to rest, as he said he felt sleepy. About 2 a.m. this(Wednesday) morning one of his sons heard him get up and obtain some refreshment. No one interviewed him, as he always objected to be assisted when he felt aid unnecessary. Upon going into his room some little while after, he was found by one of the family calmly lying upon his bed. His spirit had fled. The deceased leaves a widow and many relatives and friends to mourn their loss. |
