She was born in 1868 to John Joseph blacksmith and Mary Murphy ( nee McLachlan) of Bungendore. She married underage with Father's permission, to an apprentice of John, a James Guymer and family lore was that he made them marry in Queanbeayan, even if it was Co E as James Guymer was English background and Co E, although Catherine was Catholic. John Joseph's Blacksmith shop in Bungendore was lost when he became insolvent, but he gave his tools to Mum's Great Grandfather James Guymer, as payment for unpaid wages.

They resettled in Goulburn with my Mum James Guymer one blacksmith shop and then in another Clinton St Blacksmith Shop.
John Murphy also relocated to Goulburn and passed away there. His wife Mary took the natter of his drinking to court in 1888 to prohibit publicans selling him liquor. as he was obviously an alcoholic following his insolvency.
