Pic P1. My paternal grandmother played the piano to entertain the patients at Wharncliffe War Hospital in Sheffield, England, during WWI. She had an autograph album that a number of the patients signed, often writing poems or painting pictures, which has passed to me. I have been looking at the entries in the album, as the centenary of the outbreak of WWI approaches, and in there are two beautiful poems written by Pte Chas Sandford 2/5th Gloucester Regiment and dated 16.10.1916.

Having done some internet research, I believe this is the Charles Sandford you are researching and who died only a few months later on 22.4.1917. He must have been discharged from the hospital to return to the front and subsequently be killed in action.

- Notes: I am researching my WW1 soldier ancestors and in particular Charles James Vavasour SANDFORD, my 1st cousin twice removed. I have a marriage for him in 1914 to an Edith Margaret de Salis in Kensington.

Marriages Jun 1914
De Salis Edith M F Sandford Kensington 1a 485

However, this is not shown in your extensive de Salis data. My guess is that her family did not approve her marrying an actor!

Charles died near Arras in May 1917.
