Pic S2. My paternal grandmother played the piano to entertain the patients at Wharncliffe War Hospital in Sheffield, England, during WWI. She had an autograph album that a number of the patients signed, often writing poems or painting pictures, which has passed to me. I have been looking at the entries in the album, as the centenary of the outbreak of WWI approaches, and in there are two beautiful poems written by Pte Chas Sandford 2/5th Gloucester Regiment and dated 16.10.1916. Having done some internet research, I believe this is the Charles Sandford you are researching and who died only a few months later on 22.4.1917. He must have been discharged from the hospital to return to the front and subsequently be killed in action. |
