The Tumut Advocate 29 Nov 1921
OBITUARY MR. C. J. NICHOLLS. The death occurred on Wednesday morning, at his late residence at Burra Creek, of Mr. Charles J. Nicholls, at the age of 65 years. The late Mr. Nicholls had not been at all well for some time, and of late years never left his home. He was one of a family of 13, all of whom have now crossed the Great Divide, a younger brother, Timothy, having pre-deceased by only about a month. The late Mr. Nicholls was a fine type of old man, scrupulously honest in all his dealings and his word was his bond. Although of frail built deceased was one of the hardy old type of pioneers, who made a success of farming. Some time back he handed his property over to his sons, whom he has lived with for years, and they were all by his bedside when he passed away. In the early days he, like many of the old pioneers, had a rather rough passage, but stuck to his guns and never tired of work, till he overcame all difficulties and got together a nice compact property. He had the satisfaction of seeing all his sons grow to manhood and had the consolation of knowing they were respected, one of them (David) having served in the late war. Deceased is survived by three daughters and five sons—Mrs. C. Taber (Coolac), Mrs. A. Hill (Sydney), Mrs. W. Luff (Tumblong); Messrs Richard (Illabo), Samuel (Weelong, Forbes), S. H. (Mundongo, Tumut), David and Benjamin (Burra). A number of grandchildren are also left behind. Deceased was a native of England and came to Australia when a boy. The funeral took place on Thursday, his remains being laid to rest in the Coolac cemetery. |
