- Notes: Cyril features in a side-splitting chapter of RF Delderfield's book "For My Own
Amusement". Although no mention is made of the surname, I'd been told about it by a descendant and read it with great relish. Cyril had great long legs and when only 13 was already 5' 10" tall. He was a lifeboat enthusiast, served five years with the Royal Navy during World War II, became a draper and lived about 15 miles from Honiton in Devon. His father Ernest was a Sunday School Superintendent, a strict teetotaller, who had hundreds of valuable items in his archaeological collection. Cyril's mother also taught Sunday School and had 'a delicious Devon burr'. Described as a 'sweet gay soul', she was still living aged 93 when Delderfield's book was published in 1968. (He also wrote "A Horseman Riding By".) |
