IN MEMORIAM. PILKINGTON— In affectionate memory of our dear father Daniel Pilkington, died October 13th, 1927. (Inserted by his loving son and daughter.) Research Notes: Townsville Daily Bulletin (Qld. : 1885 - 1954) Thursday 27 October 1927 p 4 Article OBITUARY. On the 13th October, at his residence, Railway estate, Townsville, there passed to his last rest, a widely, known and respected pioneer in the person of Mr Daniel Pilkington. Born in 1853 in Lancashire, England, he came to Australia in the sailing ship, Merry Monarch, arriving at Brisbane in time to witness the big flood of 1884. His first job was that of coach driver. Later he was occupied in station railway construction, sawmilling, gold and copper mining. Later he was on the first section of the Charters Towers railway. He proceeded to Charters Towers, and obtained employment in the Dan O'Connell mine, afterwards working as a sawyer for Kelly and Sim, and later with McQuillan and Anderson. Being fond of music, he was instrumental in forming the first concert party on the field, and subsequently sang with several choirs, particularly the Wesleyan Methodist Choir. He had a vivid recollection of the occasion when the band of the day made a record run through the town behind a team of bolting horses, with the late William Hannas John. Later he came to Townsville, and preferring to live in his own home, he built a cottage in Flowers Street, then known as Fourth Avenue, and was happy in having particularly kind and thoughtful neighbours. Two of his daughters resided within easy distance, and his later days were happily spent working in his garden, meeting old time friends, and enjoying the company of his descendants, of whom Mrs. A. O. Baglini, Indooropilly, Mrs. Reid Faithful, Cloncurry, Mrs. A. H. Price and Mrs. E. H. Adams, of Townsville, are his surviving daughters. Mr. W. H. Pilkington, Brisbane, his only surviving son. He also leaves one sister, Mrs G. Morton, Brisbane, and one brother Mr W. Pilkington, Brisbane, to mourn their loss. |
