Personal Notes: |
Daniel French married Isabella Whitton in Scotland and with their sons William French and Daniel French, arrived in Sydney in 12 November 1840 by the sailing Ship Argyleshire.
In the same year the family came to Brungle where Daniel, the father, obtained employment with John Keighran as a shepherd on Brungle Station. His salary was £60 a year and rations. This consisted of 12 lb. meat, 1/21b. tea and 2 lb. sugar and sufficient wheat which they had to grist into flour. That was the weekly supply of food. In 1852 Daniel French 1st acquired from Thomas Percival the grazing right to Run No. 141 containing 1,700 acres on Upper Brungle Creek. Daniel French worked this property until his death on 16 March 1872 at the age of 60 years. He died from injuries after being thrown from a horse. In 1853 the wife of Daniel French, Isabella, died at the early age of 41 years. A solitary headstone on a lonely hillside near Nimbo Creek marks her grave and that of her son Thomas French, who died in infancy in 1848. William French’s son, Henry French, married Johanna Kiley of Red Hill Station. Henry died on 30 August 1913. |
