Personal Notes: |
Eileen, first daughter of Arthur and Leah Elworthy received her unusual second name, not to denote her religion but to honour Elizabeth Christian, her greatgreat-grandmother born on the Isle of Man in 1750.
Eileen was born in Gundagai 19 Oct 1892, the same year that artist Grace Cossington Smith, aviator Bert Hinkler and singer Gladys Moncrieff were born. William Gladstone became Prime Minister of Great Britain and Tchaikovsky's 'Nutcracker' ballet premiered in St Petersburg. Her early education was at Gundagai Public School then later as a boarder at Presbyterian Ladies College, Croydon. All the Elworthys were keen tennis players and Eileen became skilful at the game. From her mother she inherited a love of gardening which she carried throughout her life. On 03 April 1915 she married Rodolph Leopold Pierce Fane De Salis (known to the family and friends as Tony). |
