Personal Notes:
Eileen and Tony's second son was Eric James born 18 Mar 1918 at Gundagai. The world of 1918 was still in upheaval - Russian Ex-Czar Nicholas and his family were executed; the Allied offensive on the Western Front opened and a world-wide influenza epidemic struck. On 11 Nov the Armistice was signed. The total cost of this "war to end all wars" was 8.5 million killed, 21 million wounded, 7.5 million prisoners and missing; and 15 million tons of shipping lost. Daily war expenditure for all belligerents was a staggering $164.5 million! On a happier note, May Gibbs' Snugglepot and Cuddlepie was published.
Eric was educated at Canberra Grammar until 1936 then Sydney University where he graduated in Medicine in 1942. At Mosman on 22 June the following year, he wed Dorothy PRATT born 28 Api 1920. When war came Eric served in the AIF and RAMC in Australia, New Guinea and Borneo.
Following his discharge, he specialised in Pathology and gained Membership of the Royal College of Pathologists of Australia. Some early working years were spent at the Tropical Institute at Townsville and he also spent 12 months in England doing postgraduate work in various London hospitals - but the majority of Eric's working life was spent as Head of Pathology at the Royal Canberra Hospital.
