ELIZA ANN PEARCE nee Cottam

by Debbie Burgess

Eliza Ann Cottam was born on 31 January 1842, at Lamberton Green near Wigan, Manchester, England, the eldest child of nine born to Ralph and Eliza Elizabeth Cottam. Her parents, with six of her eight brothers and sisters, arrived in Sydney on board the Peter Maxwellon 10 January 1858.

The family came to Upper Adelong and selected 500 acres of land calling the properly Two Brooks now known as Ardrossan.

While living at Two Brooks her brother William and sister Hannah died. William died at the age of 19, as a result of a horse riding accident at Reedy FIat (Batlow) Race Course on 26th December 1872. Hannah died at the age of 14, from typhoid fever on 25th December 1873. The graves of Ralph , Eliza Elizabeth, William and Hannah still survive on land at "Ardrossan".

On 25 June 1861 Eliza married John Joseph Pearce at the Bago residence of Mr and Mrs Jonathan Goldspink. John Joseph, "Honest John", being a trusted and faithful servant of the proprietors of the Billapalap Station.

Eliza Ann was filled with the best qualities to suit her for the position of helpmate of an industrious, frugal and careful husband. Eliza was a most friendly and hospitable woman, she acquired the highest respect and admiration from all who knew her.

Eliza Ann and John Joseph Pearce had a family of eleven children, five sons and six daughters.

After accumulating a sufficient sum of money together, they selected an area of land at Billapalap.

They afterwards sold this land to a good advantage, and then became owners of a fine farm on the Gilmore Creek. (Which in 1911 was owned by Mr J Beck). After the disposal of the Gilmore property they secured a fine holding on Darlow's Creek, taking up residence on a site near where Mr Fred Mackay's home now stands. They held this property for a time.

While at Darlow's Creek, John Joseph and two of their sons Henry George and John Cottam joined five other male companions in gold mining pursuits at the "Navada" mine at Sharps Creek. (Application for an "Extended" Quartz Claim dated Adelong, August 5, 1885).

On 25 March 1890 while still residing at Darlow's Creek, Eliza received the news of the death of her daughter Mary (Mrs Glenville Brown) from typhoid fever at the age of 29 years, leaving seven young children aged between 2 months and 10 years.

This property was sold to enable their taking up the splendid property of Hillside Billapalap in late 1899- early 1900. There they built a most comfortable homestead.

Letters were received whilst al Hillside, detailing the death of her son Edmund James who drowned in the Darling River, near Pooncarie on 29 December 1905.

Eliza Ann died 8 May 1911 at Yaven Creek aged 69 years. Buried in the Adelong Cemetery, along with her husband and daughter Mary (Brown) .

'....We Buried old Mrs Pearce of Yaven Creek. We drove out the night before with the coffin and it took us a full day to reach the cemetery. We had silk black topper hats and the hearse entered the street, there was no minister to be found and we were perched up on this hearse whilst the parson was found; finally ending up with a storm during the burial.'
Memories of an old Adelonian - Mr H Whiting (Adelong Glimpses at the Past - Roslyn J Bird)

The properly Hillside is still held by a member of the direct family. The area is now known as Yaven Creek.
