Personal Notes: |
Nellie was born in England and married Robert Mears at Merton, Surrey in England. Robert was a fourth generation English brickmaker and was managing a brick field at Merton when it was decided to go to Australia to take up a new life of farming, an occupation in which none of the family had any experience.
They emigrated with their four children on the SS 'Rippingham Grange', leaving London on 26 February 1910 and arriving at Brisbane on 24 April 1910. Firstly they went to Esk then to the property of Nellie's brother James Francis at Biarra where they stayed while seeking a suitable farm on which to settle. They soon found one, purchasing it from the former settler. It was originally a portion of 'Cressbrook Station' in the Biarra-Toogoolawah district. The family quickly adapted themselves to their new environment and later added to the initial area. Robert's brother, Ernest Mears, followed them from England with his family in 1912, and settled at Toogoolawah. Robert and Nellie named their farm 'Morden' after the place they came from in England. Nellie contributed considerably to the excellent hospitality offered at this Cressbrook Creek home. They had commenced with farming and dairying, and before long added to their activities by founding a stud of Australian Illawarra Milking Shorthorn cattle. This stud became famous for its quality, cattle being sent to purchasers all over Queensland and as far as Croker Island, 200 miles off Darwin. The quality of their cattle was emphasised by their numerous successes at country and capital city shows. One of their many champions was a cow - 'Tulip of Morden'. After Robert and Nellie, (who suffered a long illness), passed away, their two sons, Gilbert and Stanley, and daughter, Nellie, continued on at 'Morden'. 'Tulip of Morden' The Australian IIIawarra Shorthorn Cow, 'Tulip of Morden', owned by Mr Robert Mears and family of 'Morden' Toogoolawah, was one of the most successful cows owned by the Morden Stud. Her successes included First and Reserve Champion of Toogoolawah Show. At the Royal National Exhibition in Brisbane she was fIrst in the Butter Fat Test under 4 years of age, fIrst in the Show Ring 4 years and under 5 years in Milk, fIrst in the Home Milking Butter Fat Test, and Champion Butter Fat Cow three times - 1923, 1926 and 1927, thereby winning the Courier Cup outright which had to be won by one owner, but not necessarily with the same cow. On the fIrst occasion her herdmate 'Hazel of Morden' was runnerup to 'Tulip', being Reserve Champion ButterFat Cow. 'Hazel' also won the ButterFat Test on the showground at Toogoolawah. 'Tulip's' last show was at the age of 13 years, when she won the Grimstone Shield for Butter Fat production on the Toogoolawah showground. |
