Personal Notes: |
Joseph and Ellen were married in the parish church. The parish record shows that Joseph, of full age, was a bachelor and house servant of Hampton Wick, Middlesex. His falher was Joseph Francis, deceased, a labourer. He married by banns Ellen Heathfield, of full age, a spinster and needlewoman, of Campton. Her falher was James Heathfield, deceased. Both signed their names, the witnesses being James Heathfield and Hannah Heathfield.
Joseph was a gardener. He and Ellen lived at Merton and had nine children. In 1881, they were Living at No 1 Palmen Cottages in Merton. Very little has been passed down about the family except with respect to the three members who Left England, and emigraled to Australia - James with his wife and four children in 1884, William Herbert with his wife and three children in 1909, and Ellen (Nellie) with her husband and their four children in 1910. Each family took up rural interests in the Brisbane Valley or Kumbia-Kingaroy district. These three families regularly kept in communication with each other, and with their parents and brothers and sisters in England. James and Elizabeth visited their English families in 1908 and James, after Elizabeth had died, revisited the 'Old Country' in 1926 and 1933. Each time he returned to England he was amazed at the changes there. Merton, which in his time was a rural area, had gradually become urbanised, and finally a part of the London area. The development of English transport fascinated him - trains, buses and trams had improved considerably. James, in his diary of the 1926 trip, mentioned the New London Tube - 'the longest rail tunnel in the world, 16 1/2 miles long (longest by 4 1/2 miles) in which there were 24 station stops'. After Joseph and Ellen and their family passed away, Australian branches of the family kept contact through a descendant, Eric Burke and his wife Iris who lived in Watford, England. Eric was a great-grandson of Joseph and Ellen Francis, a grandson of George Francis, and son of Ellen (Nellie) Burke (nee Francis). The hospitality extended by Eric and Iris in their English home has been appreciated by many Australian relatives and in 1977 and 1983 Eric and Iris came to Australia and visited numerous Francis family connections. |
