Personal Notes:
Re Elizabeth Vincent of Wagga Wagga

I don’t believe there is any basis for her being called Elizabeth SHORTIS Vincent
Do you have any primary source that uses the SHORTIS name?

She died 15 April 1886

Obituary in The Wagga Wagga Advertiser Saturday April 17 1886
Mrs Vincent of Rock Cottage, on the Lake Albert road, and a very old resident, died on Thursday morning last, and was buried yesterday at the Wesleyan cemetery, Wagga, the funeral service being conducted the Rev W Hill. The deceased arrived in the colony with her husband and four children in the year 1839. After a short residence in Sydney they moved to the interior, and for some years resided at Mittagong station near Yerong. At this place the late Mr Vincent died, nearly forty years ago, and some years ago his remains were brought to their present resting place in the Wagga Cemetery, by the side of which the coffin of the deceased lady was yesterday placed. There was a large attendance at the funeral, and there would have been more but for the threatening aspect of the weather. Mrs Vincent would have been 80 years of age had she lived till June.

I believe the best evidence of her birth is the obituary above so I would list date of birth as June 1806

I had some correspondence with the registrar of BDMs in Sydney some decades ago, but although I was certain, I couldn’t convince them that she died in 1886 and not 1887 as the records show. I gave up in frustration as I knew what was true.

Regarding Elizabeth Vincent at Mittagong station, Yerong Creek, she had a bad run.
In 1847 her husband died aged 42.
Then in 1863 her son Demas Vincent, aged 26, was killed in a horse accident.
Closely followed in 1863 by bushranger Dan Morgan holding up and burning Mittagong station.
Then the next year her grand-daughter was killed playing with fire at Mittagong.

DORSET FAMILY ARRIVE 99½ YEARS AGO.

Mr. and Mrs. Isaac Vincent (Elizabeth), of Dorsetshire, England, left London accompanied by their children on October 6, 1838, by the barque Bardaster of 435 tons; and arrived in Sydney on March 3, 1839 (99½ years ago). The name of the master of the barque was John Virtue. The voyage was made through the Atlantic and around South Africa, the barque having called at Adelaide an the way.

Shortly after their arrival in Australia Mr. and Mrs. Vincent came to this district, and settled on the land at Mlttagong station. Mr. Vincent died 91 years ago, and Mrs. Vincent kept on with the property. She used to drive her children to boarding school (Newington) in Sydney.

Later on the station was visited by Morgan the bushranger, who burned the station supplies, etc., and threatened to shoot Mrs. Vincent's sons. Mrs. Vincent died on April 17, 1887. Mittagong station was originally called Muttagang. Mrs. Vincent is credited with being concerned with the first sale of Crown land in these parts, when she purchased, for cash, on November 24, 1856, 350 acres at £1 an acre. In addition she acquired other large areas, which had been taken up shortly after the arrival of Mr. Vincent and herself.

Nearly a century ago, a Mrs. Johnson taught a Wesleyan Sunday School in the Court House, and was later joined by Mrs. Isaac Vincent, who had settled with her husband at Mittagong Station in 1839. Mr. Vincent died soon after his arrival in the district, and after his death, his widow drove her children to Sydney in order that they might be educated at Newington Methodist Boarding School.

Mrs. Isaac Vincent, with great ability and devotion, served the Methodist Church until her death In 1887, and it is to her that the church owes its central position in the city.
Her influence has permeated the families of Vincents, Brunskills, Bircher, Turners and Clinch, and her great-great grandchildren are in Wagga Sunday School today — the children of Mr. and Mrs. Hugh Condon.
