Daughter of William and Ellen Married Daniel in 1866 with 8 children born of this union. Freeman's Journal (Sydney, NSW : 1850 - 1932) Sat 15 Feb 1896 Our Tumut correspondent writes : — Mrs. Elizabeth O'Sullivan, the wife of Florence Daniel O' Sullivan, of Gilmore, departed this life on Saturday morning, the 1st February. Deceased, who was a good wife, a loving mother, and of a generous disposition towards friends, was a martyr to indigestion for some years past, but showed no serious symptoms of illness until a few days ago. On the morning before her death she seemed in better spirits than she had been for the previous week, but that evening it was found necessary to send for her son and Dr. Mason, who quickly responded to the summons. He found the patient in a very low & was suffering from gastric fever, and correctly predicted that the ailment would end fatally within a few hours, despite any efforts to prevent such. Father Cussen quickly repaired to the residence of Mrs.O'Sullivan, and administered to her the last rites of the Church. All her children gathered round her dying bedside, and watched all Friday night, and at 7 o'clock on Saturday morning she ceased to live. Her sufferings were very great, but the patience and resignation with which she bore her affliction showed most unmistakably that her faith was firmly fixed where every true Christian's should be. She died quite calmly, and was sensible to the last. The late Mrs. O'Sullivan was a daughter of William Blake, of Cork, Ireland. She was 56 years of age, and came to this country in 1865 — a shipmate of the late Senior-Sergeant Cassin, of Adelong, who, strange to say, died on the first of the previous month. She was married in 1866, and settled at Gilmore, where she resided, until her death. She leaves a husband and a family of five sons and three daughters, all of whom were gathered round her bedside, and a large circle of friends, to mourn her loss. On Sunday morning Mass was offered for her at Tumut and Adelong ; and Father O'Dwyer, speaking of her at the latter place, said she was a holy woman, and led a most exemplary life. The funeral, which took place in the afternoon, was the largest seen here. It was led to the cemetery by Fathers O'Dwyer and Cussen. The coffin, covered with wreaths, was borne to the grave by her five sons. The obsequies were performed by Father O'Dwyer, assisted by Father Cussen. |
